This weekend my husband and I are ridiculously excited to take our daughter to her first Vermont History Expo (not that she will remember it, but we will take lots of pictures) at the Tunbridge Fairgrounds. In addition to being an awesome high school history teacher, my husband is also a Civil War re-enactor with the Hemlocks. (Have I mentioned that we met at an American Revolution course for teachers in Virginia? We also got married at the Old Stone House complete with a contra dance – we are quite the history nerds!) Anyway, the Hemlocks are doing an encampment this weekend at the Expo complete with musket loading and firing demonstrations at 11AM, 1PM, and 3PM both days. The theme this year is Vermont in the Civil War – and since we are currently commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War this is a great opportunity to learn more about Vermont’s involvement. Other events at the Expo include: 150+ local historical societies, museums and heritage organizations Author meet and greet and book signings Parade Games for kids Heritage and rare breed animals Music and entertainment And so much more! Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children under 5. You can also buy a weekend family pass for only $20. If you really want to get into the spirit you can dress in period clothes and get half off admission! I can’t think of a better way to kick off the summer with kids. It looks like perfect weather is predicted this weekend – I’ll be there all day Saturday. Come say hello!
